Senior Kristie Yang was named the Missouri Valley Conference Golfer of the Week today for her performance at the Ball State Sunshine Invitational. This is the second time Yang has won the award this season and the fourth time a Saluki has taken the honor in 2016-17.
Â
Yang led the Salukis to a second place finish at the Ball State Sunshine Invitational with a solid performance in all three rounds. She scored in the 70s in every round and finished in third place overall, just one stroke out of a tie for first. Yang helped Southern finish in front of two teams ranked in the top-100 of the Golfstat Relative Rankings.
Â
"Kristie's ball-striking is spot on," head coach Alexis Mihelich said after the tournament. "Her game has been really strong since her win at Austin Peay. I know she will keep her play up for the rest of the semester."
Â
In her last three events, Yang has been one of the strongest Salukis on the team. Since the MVC Preview in October, Yang has shot in the 70's in every round moving into a tie for 11th on SIU's all-time list of rounds in the 70's. She is tied with her former teammate, Mattie Lindner. This was the second straight tournament Yang finished in the top-3. She won her previous event, the F&M Bank APSU Intercollegiate in October.
Â
Yang and the Salukis will be back on the course on Feb. 27 and 28 at the Islanders Classic in Corpus Christi, Texas.
