CARBONDALE, Ill. — In a hotly contested match, the Southern Illinois men's tennis team defeated in-state rival Northern Illinois, 4-0, on Saturday.
Starting off strong, the Dawgs took the doubles point against NIU with three grueling matches. The nationally ranked team of Piotr Baranski and Alex Pozo battled back to win their doubles match at the No. 2 spot, claiming the tie-breaker to win, 8-6. The No. 1 team of Michal Kianicka and Daniel Martinez were defeated, but the No. 3 doubles team of Wilder Pimentel and Param Pun won their doubles match, 6-2. That victory sealed the doubles point, leaving only three more pointes needed to win the match.
Those last three points came at the hands of the top three spots in singles play. Baranski, Pimentel, and Kianicka took home the win at No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 singles, respectively. Baranski remains undefeated in the spring season.
"The guys deserve a huge amount of credit for the way they competed today," Graduate Assistant and Coach Jonny Rigby said. "We didn't play our best doubles, but Alex and Piotr saved eight match points to claim the doubles point for us. Piotr had to dig really deep but he did a great job of staying in the match. He played strong in the third set to clinch the win."
Pozo, Peter Molloy, and Pun did not finish their matches in the No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 singles spots due to the clinched match.
SIU finishes off its busy weekend on Sunday against Lindsey Wilson College at 1 p.m. in Carbondale.
