Salukis wrap up road swing at Belmont

Southern Illinois finishes a season-opening eight-game road stretch with a 4 p.m. mid-week matchup at Belmont on Tuesday afternoon. The Salukis and Bruins have only met seven times in program history, with SIU holding a 4-3 advantage in the series after winning both games against Belmont last year.

Southern Illinois finishes an eight-game season-opening road swing with a trip to Belmont. The Salukis and Bruins will start at 4 p.m. on Feb. 28 in Nashville.
SIU enters the game at 4-3, and Belmont enters at 3-4. SIU swept a road series to open the seasson but has lost 3 of the last 4. Belmont was swept at home on opening weekend but has won 3 of the last 4.
SIU and Belmont have only played seven times. Southern leads the series 4-3 after winning both games against Belmont last year.
Southern could become the first program to win three-straight games in the series.
The game will be SIU's second mid-week game of the season. Last week, SIU lost at Austin Peay, 10-3.
SIU leads the Missouri Valley Conference in most key defensive categories. The Salukis lead the MVC in fielding percentage, base runners caught stealing and double plays turned.
The Salukis have turned nine double plays, which ranks 15th nationally. SIU has 117 double plays since the start of the 2015 season, the most in the MVC over that 2+ season span.

Leadoff hitter Connor Kopach has started the season on a seven-game hitting streak.
Nick Hutchins is coming off a five-hit series at Louisiana Monroe. Hutchins went 5-for-10 with two triples, four RBIs, five runs scored and three stolen bases.
No opponent has a stolen base against Hutchins this season. He's 3-for-3 throwing out people who tried.
SIU has pitched two shutouts in the first seven games of the season, one of 22 programs who have at least two shutouts this early in the year.
SIU is coming off a season-best 12-hit game at Louisiana Monroe. The Salukis had 32 hits in the three-game series at ULM.
