Men's Golf places 10th in stacked field at Louisiana Classics

The Southern Illinois men's golf team moved up one spot during the final round of the Louisiana Classics tournament on Tuesday to finish in 10th place out of 16 teams.
Playing in their second tournament of the spring season, the Salukis were up against a challenging field that featured four Top 25 programs in Illinois, LSU, Texas A&M and Kent State.
Kent State (-21) won the tournament and was one of three teams to finish under par. The Golden Flashes were followed by Texas A&M (-2) and LSU (-1). Southern Illinois (+46) slipped past Toledo (+47) during today's third and final round.
"That's what we want as competitors is to play against the best competition we can," said SIU head coach Justin Fetcho. "We had a lot of positives to take away from the tournament. Ball-striking wise we did a lot of good things, but we had too many putts, too many non up-and-downs. If we can clean those things up I like our chances in any tournament."Â
SIU's top finisher was senior Brandon Carlson (+5), who took 16th place. He was tied for eighth-place at 2-under heading into today's action, but ended up 15 strokes behind tournament champion Sam Burns (-10) of LSU. With a pair of 71s in the first two rounds, Carlson was the only Saluki golfer to shoot below par during the tournament at the 6,898-yard Oakbourne Country Club in Lafayette.Â
"The first 36 holes, Brandon put himself in a great position," Fetcho said. "He didn't play quite like he wanted to today, but it was a great tournament for him to build off. To get some under-par rounds early in the spring will hopefully be a spring-board into the rest of the season."
Sophomore Peyton Wilhoit (+14) had SIU's best round today with a 75. In the overall standings, he finished tied with teammate Sam Meek for 51st place out of 87 golfers.Â
The Salukis return to action in two weeks when they compete at Florida State's Seminole Intercollegiate in Tallahassee, Florida.
