AROUND THE HORN
- SIU travels to Champaign, Ill., for a four-game weekend. The Salukis play Toledo twice and Illinois twice.Â
- Southern Illinois and Toledo are meeting for the first time in baseball. The Salukis lead the all-time series against Illinois, 36-35. SIU won two out of three against Illinois last season.
- The weekend marks the end of a nine-game road trip for SIU, the longest of the year. Seventeen of the first 20 games for SIU have been on the road. After this weekend, Southern plays nine of its next 10 games at home, and the Salukis only have 11 more road games the rest of the regular season.
- Wednesday's 4-2 win at Arkansas State snapped a streak of five-straight one-run games for SIU.Â
PITCHING POSITIVE
- Southern Illinois has a team ERA of 1.78 in 12 weekend games this season. Ten different pitchers have an ERA of 3.00 of better on the weekends.
- Chad Whitmer and Michael Baird have both thrown a quality start in all of their starts in 2017.Â
- Baird is one of two starting pitchers in the nation who has yet to surrender an earned run, joining LSU's Jared Poche'.Â
- Baird posted a 1.76 ERA in 2016, the best mark for any returning starter in the NCAA. Over the last two season (19 starts), Baird has a 1.38Â ERA in 130 innings.
- Baird took a no-hitter into the ninth inning against Illinois last year. He settled for a one-hit shutout in Southern's 1-0 win.Â
- Joey Marciano has limited opponents to a .179 batting average over his three starts. Opposing hitters have only seven singles against Marciano this season.Â
- Austin McPheron has thrown well in all three of his starts this season. He has a 3.38 ERA in his three starts, and he picked up his first win of the season on Wednesday at Arkansas State.
- Closer Ryan Netemeyer has five saves this season. His 18 career saves rank fourth in SIU career history, and his next save will tie him with Todd Eaton (2011-14) and Al Levine (1990-91) for second in Saluki history.Â
- Freshman Alex Gutermuth has opened his collegiate career with 9.1 scoreless innings. Opponents are hitting .107 off Gutermuth.Â
