CARBONDALE, ILL. - The opening week of Missouri Valley Conference play concluded Sunday for the Southern Illinois softball team with a 6-5 loss to Bradley University. SIU won two of three in the series.
Â
Today's game started off rocky for Brianna Jones and the Salukis. BU began the game by scoring two quick runs in the top of the first, and after a quiet bottom half from SIU, tacked on two more in the top of the second.
Â
The Braves didn't hold on to the four run lead for long, as Southern responded in a big way in the bottom of the second. After a lead off single by senior Merri Anne Patterson, junior Sydney Jones sent one deep over the wall in center, cutting BU's lead to two. It was Jones' sixth home run of the season, which is tops on the team.
Â
The third inning featured more scoring from SIU. Eyrika Brandenburg reached on a fielder's choice and then later was pushed over to third by back-to-back walks from Shaye Harre and Katelyn Massa. With one out and the bases loaded, Patterson drove a pitch up the middle, scoring two and tying up the game at four all. Patterson finished the day with three hits and batted a clean .500 on the weekend.
Â
The game remained at 4-4 for two innings before Southern made another offensive splash. Maddy Vermejan led off the Salukis with a bullet through the right side of the field. Bradley quickly recorded two outs, leaving SIU down to their last chance. Susie Baranski stepped in next and delivered her fifth hit of the series, scoring Vermejan from second. The run gave SIU a 5-4 lead heading to the seventh.
Â
In the top of the seventh Bradley got the biggest two hits of the game. After a lead off single, the Braves went deep off of Nicole Doyle to take a 6-5 lead. The Salukis were able to get runners on in the bottom of the seventh, but were unable to bring any home.
Â
SIU moves to 14-14 on the year and 2-1 in conference play. The team will have a break Monday, then be back in action on Tuesday at home against UT-Martin.
