Jones throws gem in win over Drake

CARBONDALE, ILL. - The Southern Illinois University softball team picked up its third conference win today, beating Drake, 1-0, behind a complete-game shutout by Brianna Jones.
At the plate, the Salukis (15-14, 3-1) had runners on base in every inning, but it wasn't until the bottom of the fourth that SIU picked up its only run of the day. A leadoff double by Merri Anne Patterson sparked the offense. Sydney Jones bunted Patterson over to third, sacrificing the first out of the inning. Maddy Vermejan then drove a single up the middle scoring Patterson.Â
A 1-0 lead was all Jones needed to close out the game. She retired the Bulldogs (16-14, 0-4) in order the first three innings. The only batter who reached base was thrown out at second by Katelyn Massa.
In the final three innings, the Bulldogs were only able to get one runner on base. Jones finished the game with four strikeouts and gave up just two hits. It was her second shutout victory of the year.
SIU and DU will play two games tomorrow to conclude the series.The first pitch is set for 11 a.m.
