CARBONDALE, ILL. - The Southern Illinois University softball program plays host for the second weekend in a row to open up their conference schedule. The Salukis will play a three game series with preseason favorite, Drake University. The two teams are scheduled to play two on Saturday, beginning at 12 p.m., and one on Sunday starting at 11 a.m.
Southern enters the weekend with a 2-1 record in Missouri Valley Conference play. SIU won last Saturday's games against Bradley University and lost by one to the Braves on Sunday. In the two games the Salukis won, Brianna Jones and Savanna Dover both pitched one run complete games. At the plate SIU scored 13 runs during the whole series, while only giving up eight. The play of Merri Anne Patterson and Susie Baranski led the team offensively. Together the two drove in five total runs, while scoring four runs themselves. Baranski's performance at the plate tabbed her as the Newcomer of the Week in the MVC for the second time this season.Â

During head coach Kerri Blaylock's tenure at SIU she is 26-17 against the Bulldogs and 3-6 since seniors, Shaye Harre, Merri Anne Patterson, and Jessa Thomas, have played at SIU. A season ago the Salukis dropped all three against Drake in Des Moines, Iowa. In those three games Southern was held to three runs or less each game, including one game where they were shutout. Nicole Newman, last year's pitcher of the year and this season's preseason first team All-Conference selection, won two of the games for DU, gving up just one earned run.Â
In the all-time series SIU leads, 53-29.
Salukis in the MVC Rankings
After one weekend of conference play Southern Illinois is in the top five in eight statistical categories. SIU is No. 3 in three pitching categories, ERA, opposing batting average, and strikeouts. At the plate the Salukis are No. 2 in walks and No. 4 in doubles and home runs. For a complete look of the MVC stats click here.
Individually, Southern have multiple players inside the top ten in many categories.
