The Southern Illinois men's tennis team swept Eastern Kentucky, 7-0, on Saturday for their seventh-straight win.
The Salukis started off strong in doubles as Alex Pozo and Piotr Baranski defeated their EKU counterparts, 6-3, in the first flight. Michal Kianicka and Peter Molloy won, 6-4, at the second, and Wilder Pimentel and Param Pun won, 6-1, at the third. For Kianicka, the victory marked his 67th doubles win and broke the SIU record of most wins in doubles by an individual. He broke the mark set by coach and former doubles partner Jonny Rigby.
"Mike has had a really good career as a Saluki and it is a great achievement for him to have broken this record," Rigby said. "I'm glad that he is the person to break my record."
SIU made a change to its singles lineup as Pimentel was moved to the No. 1 spot. He won his match 6-2, 6-3 for his 14th victory of the year. Baranski moved to the No. 2 spot and won his match 6-4, 6-3. Kianicka, Pozo, Martinez and Pun all stayed at their respective flights and won.
"Today was a complete performance from the team," Rigby said. "From the first point to the last the guys were really focused and did their jobs. I am incredibly proud of the season we are having."
The Salukis are 14-2 and hope their confidence carries over to next Saturday's final home match against Wichita State. Haru Inoue from Wichita is ranked No. 79 nationally and was ranked No. 20 in the Central region in singles. Inoe along with Miroslav Herzan are ranked No. 8 regionally in doubles.
The Salukis face the Shockers for Senior Day at 10 a.m. on April 1 in Carbondale.
