Southern leads by 22 strokes at the Saluki Invitational

The Salukis jumped out to a 22 stroke lead on the opening day of the Saluki Invitational, the largest opening day lead that any team has had at the tournament in more than 10 years.

The Salukis shot a 602 in the opening two rounds and lead Loyola, who are in 2nd. Senior Brooke Cusumano leads the tournament after shooting a 73 and 71 in the first two rounds, both rounds are the two lowest scores she has had in competition at Hickory Ridge Golf Course. Four Salukis, including freshman Lili Klekner-Alt, who played on Southern's B team, are in the top-10. All of the Salukis' A team is in the top-15.

Cusumano led the way for SIU. She shot a 1-under par 71 in the second round for her fourth round at or below-par this season. The St. Louis native is tied for second at SIU for most rounds at or below par in a season. Cassie Rushing did it five times in 2013 and 2014. Cusumano has a one stroke lead over Loyola's Elayna Bowser. Cusumano shot a two-round score of 144 today, tying for the third lowest two-round score in Saluki Invitational history.

Juniors Hanna Netisingha and Alice Ho are tied for seventh. Both golfers shot in the 70's in the two rounds. Netisingha birdied holes four and five in the second round on her way to a 74. Ho and Netishingha both had 23 pars on the first day of the tournament. Neither player carded worse than a bogey in the second round.

Kristie Yang is in 11th and is one stroke out of 10th place. Xianmei Jin is tied for 12th and is three strokes out of a tie for tenth place.

Southern's B team is in fifth place and just four strokes away from third. Lili Klekner-Alt shot a 73 in the second round to help the B team move up three spots in the second round; she is in ninth as an individual. She shaved five strokes off of her first round total of 78. The 73 was her lowest score in competition as a Saluki.

Southern's two-round score of 602 is tied for the second lowest two-round score in tournament history. Illinois State shot a 602 in 2008. The team also tied for the second lowest second round score in the history of the Saluki Invitational with a 296. Illinois State also shot a 296 in 2008.
