CARBONDALE, ILL. - The Southern Illinois University softball team (17-14) welcomes sister school, Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville (25-9), to town tomorrow for a midweek matchup. Both teams are have won five of their last six games.
The two schools have played each other 43 times, SIU controlling the series, 37-7. Since head coach Kerri Blaylock took over back in 2000, SIU is 4-2 against the Cougars. In all four wins the Salukis held SIUE to two runs or less. The most recent game between the two teams was back in 2015. SIU won the game, 5-1.Â
Southern Illinois enters tomorrow's contest at 17-14 overall, winning seven of their last eight. The team most recently swept the Drake Bulldogs in three game series last weekend. In the series the Dawgs out scored DU 13 to three. Brianna Jones got two wins and save during the three game stint. Her performance earned her Pitcher of the Week honors in the Missouri Valley Conference for the fourth time of her young career. It was the seventh weekly honor she's earned, which is tied for seventh most all-time in the MVC.
At the plate the Salukis have begun to find their grove. In the last six games six Salukis are batting .275 or higher. The team has outscored their opponents 26 to 11 in those games and has a team on base percentage of .391%. Leading the charge is Maddy Vermejan, who is batting over .500 and slugging .692%. Directly behind her is Merri Anne Patterson, who is batting .450 and slugging .600%. The two combined for nine RBIs and ten runs in the six game stretch. Patterson accounted for 54% of the Salukis' offense during the Drake series, either driving in or scoring 7 of the 13 runs.Â
This will be the first midweek matchup that SIU has had since the conference series started. The first scheduled midweek game against the University of Tennessee-Martin was canceled due to rain last week. Tomorrow's game is scheduled to start at 4 p.m. at Charlotte West Stadium. The game will have a live audio stream and live stats.
