ST. LOUIS - Senior Kyle Landon was named both the Missouri Valley Conference Men's Field Athlete of the Week and the MVC Scholar-Athlete of the Week while fellow senior Freya Block earned MVC Women's Field Athlete of the Week, the Valley announced Tuesday.
Kyle Landon recorded three top-15 regional marks, including the top high jump clearance in the NCAA at the Bill Cornell Spring Classic over the weekend. The Chester, Ill. native is the only jumper, male or female, to currently rank in the top-15 of all three jumps in either region.Â
The five-time All-American opened the 2017 outdoor season with a win in the high jump after he cleared 7'-2.50" (2.20m) and followed with a victory in the long jump with the 10th-best leap in the west region at 24'-5.5" (7.45m). He concluded his day in the triple jump, where he was the top collegiate finisher with a mark of 49'-10" (15.19m). In doing so, it gave him his third top-15 mark, as he currently ranks 12th in the triple jump in the west region.
It marks the sixth time this season, and the 13th time in his career that Landon has earned MVC Scholar-Athlete of the Week honors, while it is the ninth time that he has received MVC Field Athlete of the Week recognition.
Block earned MVC Women's Field Athlete of the Week honors for the fourth time this season after she had a big day in the ring for the Salukis at the Bill Cornell Spring Classic.
The Neposet, Ill. native set personal-bests in both the discus and the hammer throw en route to her first win of the season in the hammer. She opened the meet with a more than 12-foot personal-best in the discus Friday night and followed with a win in the hammer throw on Saturday. Her winning toss of 207'-04" (63.19m) in the hammer was not only a lifetime-best, but it also moved her up to sixth on SIU's all-time list.Â
Block currently ranks fourth in the west region, and fifth in the NCAA in the hammer.
The Salukis are back in action on Saturday, April 1, when they take part in the SEMO Invite in Cape Girardeau, Mo.
