Men's Golf in 10th place at Vanderbilt's Mason Rudolph Invitational
03/31/2017 | 4:26:00 | Men's Golf
The Southern Illinois men's golf team stands in 10th place at 6-over par after the first round of competition on Friday at the Mason Rudolph Invitational, hosted by Vanderbilt.
The 14-team field is stacked with some of the nation's top college golf programs, including No. 6-ranked Florida (-9), which holds a one-stroke lead over No. 3-ranked Vanderbilt (-8). Overall, there are seven teams among the top 52 in the nation.Â
Senior Brandon Carlson (Even) is the team's scoring leader so far at the par 71 Legends Club in Franklin, Tenn. He is tied for 23rd place out of 78 golfers after a steady round in which he parred 14 holes, birdied two and bogeyed two more.
Teammates Matt Greenfield (+1) and Peyton Wilhoit (+1) also had strong performances in the opening round. Greenfield recorded five pars and would have fared even better if not for a triple-bogey on the 18th hole. Wilhoit had the team's only eagle of the day, which he recored on the par five 14th hole.Â
The teams will play two more rounds  — one each on Saturday and Sunday.
