The Saluki women's golf team finished out its season with a sixth place finish at the Missouri Valley Conference Women's Golf Championship at Dalhousie Golf Club in Cape Girardeau, Mo.
Â
Southern had its best round of the tournament on Tuesday, a team score of 311, but it was not enough to improve its standing on the overall team leaderboard. All five Salukis shot in the 70's in the closing round. It was one of only two teams to accomplish that feat in the final round. The Salukis were just five strokes outs of a tie for third place.
Â
The Salukis seemed poised to make a run at a top five finish for most of the day. Southern jumped up the leaderboard early and with six holes to play were in a tie for third with Bradley. However, some high scores in the closing holes sealed the team's fate.
Â
Senior Brooke Cusumano had her best round of the tournament on her way to her 10th top 10 finish of the season. She carded a 74 on her way to All-Conference honors and a ninth place finish. It is the second time of her career that she has made the MVC All-Conference team. Cusumano was in the top five in pars and par-five scoring.
Â
Cusumano closed out her career with the best single season scoring average in school history at 75.78 strokes per round. Allison Hiller was the previous holder of the record. She set a mark of 76.36 strokes per round in 2001-02.
Â
She was also awarded the conference's Elite 18 Award for excellence in the classroom and on the course. The senior from St. Louis has a 4.0 GPA in accounting.
Â
Missouri State was crowned the Missouri Valley Conference champions after a wire-to-wire victory. The Bears won the championship by 20 strokes over second placed Wichita State for their first team title since 2012 and third title in team history. It was the largest margin of victory at the MVC Championship since 1996. Evansville's Kayla Katterhenry was the tournament medalist. She shot 72 in the first two rounds and two over par 74 today.
Â
With today's result Southern's season comes to an end. Southern won three tournaments this year and finished in the top five nine times, the most in both categories since 2011-12.
