CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Southern Illinois baseball team fell to Dallas Baptist, 4-2, on Saturday afternoon at Itchy Jones Stadium. The second game of the doubleheader was suspended in the bottom of the sixth inning with DBU leading, 7-1. The teams will resume the game on Sunday, April 30, at 11 a.m.
The opener was a pitcher's duel between Southern's Michael Baird and DBU's Jordan Martinson. Baird allowed only one run; Camryn Williams hit a two-out RBI single the fourth inning. Baird struck out six in six innings and scattered five hits. After allowing 20 earned runs over his last three starts, Baird returned to his dominant form that earned him recognition as the consensus preseason MVC Pitcher of the Year.
"Without a doubt, the most positive thing in the doubleheader was that Michael Baird looked like himself today," SIU head coach Ken Henderson said. "He was in the zone. He was locked in. He threw well enough to win. That was encouraging. That's his best outing in four weeks; and if he continues to throw like that, we will win a lot of games with him."
The Patriots (26-16, 7-4 MVC) expanded the lead after Baird left the game. DBU got a two-out double and a run-scoring single in the seventh. It added two runs in the eighth with an infield single, a walk, a double and an error.
"We need to do a better job in the back end," Henderson said. "(Baird) leaves that game down 1-0. Our bullpen needs to throw up zeros, and we didn't do that. Those three runs we gave up ended up being the game."
The Salukis finally got to Martinson in the eighth. Logan Blackfan led off with a walk, and Nick Hutchins and Will Farmer followed with singles to load the bases. Dyllin Mucha brought two runs home with a single up the middle. Southern (23-21, 6-5 MVC) had the go-ahead run at the plate in the eighth and the tying run at the plate in the ninth, but the Salukis grounded into double plays to end both innings.
"We didn't square up a lot of balls," Henderson said. "We didn't hit many balls hard. We competed. We moved the baseball, but we didn't square much up. We didn't give ourselves opportunities. We made more mental mistakes than physical mistakes. We didn't play poorly, but we made mistakes."
In the second game, SIU struck first. Logan Blackfan hit an RBI double in the fourth inning to give SIU a 1-0 lead. The double was the 51st of Blackfan's career, which tied a school record.
DBU scored three in the fifth to take a 3-1 lead. SIU put the tying runs in scoring position in the bottom half of the inning but didn't score. The Patriots scored four more runs in the top of the sixth to take a 7-1 lead, and the game was stopped with two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning due to lightning. The teams will resume the game with Blackfan on first base and a 2-1 count on Mitch Fairfield on Sunday at 11 a.m.
