Drake defeated the Southern Illinois men's tennis team, 4-3, in a grueling match on Saturday.
The Salukis started off strong, winning the doubles point. Piotr Baranski and Alex Pozo defeated Bayo Philips and Barny Thorold, 6-3, in No. 1 doubles and Param Pun and Wilder Pimentel defeated Ben Wood and Calum MacGeoh, 7-6(5), in No. 3 doubles securing the point for the Salukis.
In singles, Pimentel and Kianicka had won their first set in No. 2 and No. 3 singles, but Baranski, Pozo, Martinez and Pun had all lost their first set.
SIU kept battling, as Kianicka defeated MacGeoh at No. 3 and Baranski ultimately came out on top in No. 1 singles, defeating No. 83 Gillespie in a tie-breaking set, 6-4. However, Pimentel, Pozo, Martinez and Pun all lost their matches.
"We didn't play our best tennis today," Coach Jonny Rigby said. "But we fought right until the end and came very close to getting the win. We had a couple go against us today, and in the end, that made the difference."
Southern is 15-3 on the season, 1-1 in the MVC, and the team has one more conference matchup before the regular season ends. The Salukis take on the Illinois State Redbirds on April 14 in Bloomington, Ill.
