CEDAR FALLS, IOWA - Northern Iowa swept a doubleheader from the Saluki softball team on Saturday, winning 4-0 and 5-2.Â
In game one, Brianna Jones got the start for the Salukis (19-18, 7-4) and pitched all seven innings in the loss. She allowed one run in the second inning, two in the fourth on a two-out double, and one more in the sixth on a solo home run. She finished the game with five strikeouts.
Jaci Spencer, UNI's starting pitcher, held the Dawgs in check at the plate, only giving up one hit through the first five innings. In the top of the seven, the Salukis showed some life at the plate. Down to their last out, Sydney Jones singled to right field, and Maddy Vermejan doubled down the left-field line. Haley Andrus grounded out to end the game.Â
Game two was similar to game one. SIU struggled at the plate through the first four innings, held hitless by UNI's Alyssa Buchanan.Â
Savanna Dover got the start in game two for SIU and gave up three runs on three hits and two walks in the second inning.Â
In the top of the fifth inning, the Salukis finally got on the board. Vermejan and then Kyleigh Decker were hit by pitches. Savannah Fisher laid down a sacrifice bunt, but UNI's third baseman charged hard on the play to get the lead runner at third base. Susie Baranski drew a four pitch walk to load the bases. Eyrika Brandenburg grounded into a fielder's choice to score one run and cut the deficit to 3-1.Â
The Panthers responded in the bottom half of the inning with a two-run home run, giving them their largest lead in the game.Â
With UNI ahead, 5-1, the Salukis were down to their last three outs. Baranski launched a one-out homer to left centerfield for her second career home run for SIU. That was the final run in the 5-2 loss.Â
