CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Southern Illinois baseball team set a program record with a 3.337 team GPA. The Salukis achieved the mark while in season and playing 55 regular season games. SIU shattered the previous in-season record of 3.07 set during the 2015 season.Â
This marks the third-straight season under head coach Ken Henderson that the Salukis have re-set the program GPA record. The 2015 team set both fall and spring GPA records. The 2016 team broke the fall GPA record, and this year's team shattered the spring semester GPA record. The Salukis have recorded a 3.00 team GPA for six-straight semesters.Â
"Our athletes understand the importance of academics, and I could not be more proud of their efforts," Henderson said. "To obtain the highest team GPA in program history is a great accomplishment, but to do it during our season is even more impressive."
Twenty-seven of the 34 players on the team recorded a GPA of 3.0 or better during the Spring 2017 semester. Six players achieved perfect 4.0 GPAs: Mitch Fairfield, Brad Harrison, Jared Kengott, Nick Newman, Anthony Shimkus and Ryan Sabo. Sabo graduated with a perfect 4.0 GPA in finance. He was honored earlier this year as an Academic All-District selection.Â
The Salukis have earned 17 MVC Scholar-Athlete team members in the last six years.Â
So proud of @SIU_Baseball players excelling in the classroom with a 3.337 team GPA. Highest in program history.
