The Southern Illinois University women's volleyball team received an NCAA Public Recognition Award for its Academic Progress Rate (APR) on Wednesday.
For the Saluki women's volleyball team it is the fourth-time in program history, and first since 2010-11, that they have earned an NCAA Public Recognition Award. Since the NCAA began honoring athletics programs in 2004-05, Southern Illinois has had six teams receive public recognition a total of 16 times.
The Academic Progress Rate is a real-time measure of eligibility and retention of student-athletes competing on every Division I sports team. The most recent APR scores are based on a multi-year rate that averages scores from the 2012-13, 2013-14, 2014-15 and 2015-16 academic years.
Based on their most recent multiyear Academic Progress Rate, teams earn NCAA Public Recognition Awards for posting scores in the top-10 percent of their sport. The APR is an annual scorecard of academic achievement calculated for all Division I sports teams nationally.
The scores required to be in the top-10 ranged from 984 to a perfect 1,000, depending on the sport. Earning a perfect APR score were 1,090 teams from across the nation. This marked the 12th year of APR for most athletics programs.
This year, 1,203 NCAA Division I sports teams were recognized for outstanding performance in the classroom including 746 women's teams and 457 men's teams or co-ed teams.
APR scores for all Division I teams will be released May 10. All teams must meet an academic threshold of 930 to qualify for postseason in their respective sports and can face penalties for continued low academic performance.
