CARBONDALE, ILL. - Southern Illinois (30-22) capped off its regular season by completing the sweep of Missouri State (22-25) today, winning game three, 3-2. Eyrika Brandeburg was the hero, hitting a walk-off double in the bottom of the seventh to score Susie Baranski for the game's winning run. It was the fourth consecutive win for the Salukis and the team's third sweep in Missouri Valley Conference play.
Nicole Doyle started today's game and pitched three strong innings for the maroon and white. She held the Bears to five hits and one run, while picking up two strikeouts in the process. Doyle finished the regular season with 77 K's in 79 innings of work, nearly averaging one strikeout per inning.
Southern got on the board first, plating a couple in the bottom of the third. Shaye Harre got the Salukis going with a double in the right center gap with one out. The double made Harre SIU's all-time leader, breaking the previous record of 47. She also tied tied the single-season record, finishing the regular season with 17 two-baggers. Sydney Jones was up two batters later and hit a liner off the pole in left field for her ninth homer of the season and second of the weekend. SIU led, 2-0, after three.
In the top half of the fourth the Bears responded with a run of their own. MSU picked up two hits in the inning, one of them being a triple, to score their first run of the game. Brianna Jones came in to the game one batter after the three-bagger and got the Salukis out of the inning.Â
MSU tacked one more on the board in the top of the fifth to tie the game at two. It was again scored with the help of an extra base hit.Â
The game remained tied until the bottom half of the seventh. Missouri State began the inning by getting two quick outs on Southern. Susie Baranski then stepped in and made things happen. The freshman swung at the first pitch, singling into left field, and then stole second base for her ninth swipe of the season. Baranski's single was her 53rd hit of the year, which is the most by a Saluki since Jayna Spivey's 55 hits back in 2014. Baranski is also the first freshman to lead the Salukis in hits since Alicia Garza in 2007. Brandenburg took care of the rest after Baranski got into scoring position. The Saluki sophomore launched a ball into the left center gap for a walk off winner. She finished the weekend with four hits and three RBIs.
The win moved SIU's conference record to 17-8. It was the best finish the team has had since 2011.Â
Southern, winners of eight of their last 10, will head to the MVC tournament this week as the No. 3 seed. SIU will play in Normal, Illinois at 1:30 p.m. on Friday (5/12). Their opponent will either be MSU or Drake University. The Salukis are a combined 6-0 against those two teams this season, sweeping them both at home.
