Four Southern Illinois baseball players were taken in the 2017 Major League Baseball Draft.Â
Greg Lambert, a junior in 2017, has started all 169 games in his three-year Saluki career. He is coming off a first-team All-MVC season in 2017. He led the team in average, hits, doubles, home runs, RBIs and slugging percentage. His 25 doubles broke Southern's single-season record.Â
Nick Hutchins, also a junior in 2017, was one of the top defensive catchers in the nation. He earned a spot on the Johnny Bench Award Watch List, given to the nation's best catcher. He threw out 12 runners trying to steal. Offensively, he hit 16 doubles, three triples and a home run.Â
Joey Marciano, a senior in 2017, struck out 56 in 46 innings last year. In his two years at SIU after transferring from John A. Logan, Marciano won seven games and made 27 starts, all on the weekend. He limited opponents to a .229 average in two seasons, including a remarkably low .190 mark in 2017.Â
Southern's four draft picks were the most for the program since 1990. The four picks contributed to the 24 picks of MVC players in 2017, the most for the league since 2007.Â
