Saluki senior Kyle Landon tied for 15th in the men's high jump at the 2017 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field National Championships, hosted by the University of Oregon Friday night.
The five-time All-American from Chester, Ill. cleared 6'-9.25" (2.08m) on his second attempt. He was one of eight jumpers to miss at 6'-11.75" (2.13m), of which he was one of four to record a miss on the opening bar.
Christoff Bryan of Kansas State, last year's runner-up, won his first national title. He cleared 7'-3" (2.21m) on his second attempt, while Trey Culver of Texas Tech settled for second after he cleared the same height on his third try.Â
Landon ends his Saluki career as one of the most decorated athletes in program history. A silver medalist at the 2016 U.S. Olympic Trials, Landon is the first jumper in Missouri Valley Conference history to win eight titles in the high jump. In all, he's a nine-time MVC Champion, and one of six athletes in Valley history to earn a share of the Most Valuable Athlete award at the conference's indoor and outdoor championships in the same season.Â
He was also honored as the Most Outstanding Male Field Athlete for the fourth-time in his career at the 2017 MVC Outdoor Championships, becoming just the second male in conference history to win four-straight Most Outstanding Male Field Athlete awards since the conference began giving out the award in 1992.
He's done all that while excelling in the classroom. Last year, he became the first Saluki since 1985 to earn back-to-back Academic All-America laurels. This year he was already named to his third-straight CoSIDA Academic All-District team and is on the ballot for a spot on the Academic All-America Team.Â
