Three Salukis reach double figures in kills in loss to Redwolves.
CARBONDALE, Ill. -- The Southern Illinois volleyball team fell 3-1 (25-20, 22-25, 25-13, 25-22) to the Arkansas State Redwolves Tuesday night inside SIU Arena.
The Salukis (0-4) hit .208 for the match, including .417 during the second set. Arkansas State (2-2) one-upped SIU, hitting at a .310 clip. The Redwolves were led by Preseason Sun Belt Conference Player of the Year Carlisa May, who finished with a match-high 23 kills and nine digs.
"(May) is a good player," said first-year head coach Kari Thompson. "Nellie (Fredriksson) was matched up with her in the first two sets and that was a good matchup for us, experience-wise. Maggie (Nedoma), a freshman, came in and it was a little eye opening for her at first. But she responded well. It took her a little bit, but she figured it out and made some good adjustments. I'm happy with that, but would've liked to see us play better after we got to 20 points."
SIU was led offensively by Maggie Nedoma, who finished with a team-high 15 kills on 35 attempts. Kolby Meeks hit a season-best .565 with 14 kills on 23 swings and just one error. Andrea Estrada was Southern's third hitter to reach double figures in kills, as she tallied 11 and added six digs.
Defensively, Ashley Edelen set career-highs in both assists (7) and digs (22), while Alayna Martin notched her first collegiate double-double with 27 assists and 11 digs.
The two sides traded points through the early going of the opening frame, with nine ties and two lead changes. Southern claimed its second, and final, lead of the first set at 13-12 on a side-out kill by Meeks. The two sides traded points before Arkansas State closed on a 5-1 run to take set one, 25-21.
Southern led by as many as five in set two, as a Meeks kill on a pass from Martin made it 19-14. Arkansas State trimmed its deficit down to two, 20-18. But a side-out kill by Abby Barrow helped SIU seize a 25-22 set two victory.
Southern's comeback attempt was quickly stifled by May, who tallied nine of her 23 kills during the Redwolves' emphatic 25-13 set three win.
SIU regrouped in the fourth frame behind Nedoma, who recorded back-to-back kills and a block assist during a 6-1 run that broke a 9-9 tie and made it 15-10 in favor of the Salukis. The Redwolves rallied, as they rattled off five unanswered points to tie the set, 16-16. SIU claimed its last lead, 20-19, on Nedoma's 14th kill, but that was as close as they could get.
The Salukis are back in action on Tuesday, Sept. 5 at Murray State. First serve against the Racers is set for 7 p.m.
