Match Notes
All-time versus Murray State
Southern is 17-2 all-time against the Racers in a series that dates back to 1975. The Salukis have never lost to Murray State at home, sporting a perfect 14-0 record all-time on their home court. Southern's last loss to their OVC counterparts came on Oct. 14, 2003, a 3-0 loss at Murray State. The Dawgs come into Tuesday's matchup riding an eight-match winning streak over the Racers.
SIU vs. the Ohio Valley Conference
Southern is 84-33 (.718) all-time versus current OVC schools, and comes into tonight's matchup on an eight-match win streak over Ohio Valley Conference foes, with their last loss coming almost three years ago to the day, a defeat at the hands of SEMO in five sets (25-21, 21-25, 25-20, 23-25, 10-15) on Sept. 7, 2013. Dating back to 2006, Southern has won 19 of its last 21 matches against Ohio Valley schools.
120 Away from 1,000
Abby Barrow is 120 kills from becoming the 15th Saluki to reach the 1,000-kill milestone. The Metamora, Ill. native has finished in the top-16 of the Missouri Valley Conference for kills in each of the past two seasons and is one of four Salukis with 25+ kills during the first four matches of 2017.
First career double-double
Alayna Martin notched her first career double-double against Arkansas State, as she tallied a career-high 11 digs to go along with 27 assists. She's the 71st Saluki since 1981 to record a double-double.
Edelen settling in at Libero
Ashley Edelen has started at libero in each of SIU's four matches this season, and has set a career-high in digs in two of those four matches. The Louisville, Ky., native recorded 19 digs in Southern's five-set loss to Northern Arizona and, two matches later, tallied 22 digs in SIU's four-set loss to Arkansas State. Edelen also set a career-high with seven assists against the Redwolves, which marked the third-straight match she has set or tied her career-best in that category.
Oh So Close
Rachel Maguire came so close to being the second Saluki to record a double-double against Arkansas State, as she tallied 14 assists and a career-best nine digs. She's averaged 14.5 assists and six digs in each of the past two matches after recording just three assists and one dig in Southern's first two matches.
Moving On Up
Andrea Estrada now has 1,156 career kills- which is three away from passing Heather Heades (1992-95) for eighth on SIU's all-time list and eight from moving past Deb Heyne (1991-94) for seventh. She is also 28 digs shy of breaking into SIU's top-five all-time.
15+ kills by a freshman
Maggie Nedoma put down 15 kills on 35 swings against Arkansas State in just her fourth career match. She became the 16th Saluki since 2003 to record 15+ kills in a single match as a freshman, and the first to do so since Ginger Perinar put down 16 against Evansville on Nov. 19, 2016. Doing so in her fourth career match ties her for third with Andrea Estrada in terms of quickest to put down 15+ kills in a match at SIU. Estrada notched 16 kills at Middle Tennessee in her fourth career match on Sept. 2, 2014. Former Saluki standouts Haley Hann and Chandra Roberson each put down 15+ kills in their respective debuts. Hann tallied 15 kills vs. Austin Peay on Aug. 29, 2003, while Roberson followed with 16 kills vs. IUPUI three years later on Aug. 25, 2006.
Meeks in the Middle
Kolby Meeks hit for a high efficiency in SIU's match against Arkansas State, as she posted a team-high .565 hitting percentage. The Norcross, Ga. native finished with 14 kills on 23 attempts and just one error, and added a block assist and a dig. It marked the 10th time in her career that she has put down 10+ kills in a match.
