Salukis finish sixth at Redbird Invitational

    After two days of competition, the Salukis finished the first tournament of the 2017-18 season, the Redbird Invitational, in sixth place.

    Southern started slow but bounced back in the final two rounds with team scores of 307 and 310. SIU ended the three rounds with a score of 937 to finish sixth strokes from fifth place Illinois State.

    "Our first round killed us so we built a huge hole after round one. We slowly chipped away at it and almost got to fifth", O'Brien said. "We came back and our second-round score is right where the leaders score were. The talent is there and when we all get it going at the same time or play better than mediocre we will be higher up on the leaderboard."

    O'Brien said she was impressed by the way freshmen Moyea Russell and Emilyee McGiles played in their first collegiate tournament.
Â
    Russell led the Salukis finishing tied for 10th place with an overall score of 229. McGiles finished tied for 35th with a three-round score of 239.

    Senior Hanna Netisingha finished the tournament tied for 18th with an overall score of 233.
    Â
    The Dawgs will continue to polish up on their skills when they play agaon September 18-19 at the Cardinal Classic hosted by Ball State University.
