The Saluki Women's Golf team will travel to Muncie, Ind. on Sept. 18-19 to compete in the 2017 Cardinal Classic hosted by Ball State University.
This is the first time the Salukis are going to the Cardinal Classic since 2011 when the Salukis won the event as a team and Saluki Margaret Gilley won as an individual in head coach Alexis O'Brien's first year.
The Dawgs will face off against some strong teams in the country. Toledo is just two spots away from breaking the top 100 and NIU isn't too far behind at No. 126. 19 teams will be competing in total and half of the Missouri Valley Conference will be playing.
The Salukis are ranked No. 172 in the nation  and were only six strokes from fifth place No. 189 Illinois State at the Redbird Invitational. O'Brien said that if the team finished within the top five the Cardinal Classic would be an exceptional tournament for them.
"I'm feeling pretty good about going into the tournament," O'Brien said. "At practice, we really worked on getting the ball to the hole so we can make birdies. Historically, we don't score as well at Weibring, but I know we can score on the course at The Players Club."
Freshman Moyea Russell will be starting in the number one spot and freshman Emilyee McGiles in the number three. Senior Hanna Netisingha, Sophomore Erica Kerr, and Senior Alice Ho will be starting at the two, four and five positions.
O'Brien said she hasn't started a freshman in this kind of lineup since her coming to SIU. She expects both Russell and McGiles to do well and step up this week.
The Cardinal Classic will start with a shotgun start of 36 holes at 8:30 a.m. on Monday. Round two will continue Tuesday. Live scoring can be found on golfstat.com.
