Bryn Handley opened her season today as an open water national champion.
Handley and the Saluki distance swimmers competed in the CSCAA Open Water National Championships today at Lonestar Lake in Lawrence, Kansas. Handley won the 5k race with a time of 1:04:39.22 to be crowned open water national champion over swimmers from Rice, Kansas and Missouri. The Saluki women finished in fourth place in the College Swimming Coaches Association of America sanctioned event.
"We had great efforts from all six of our swimmers today," head coach Rick Walker said. "Bryn won and never gave up the lead. Kelsie Walker swam in her first full race after having major a blood clot in her leg and Jordan Ries was right there to clinch fourth place for us. This is a big deal in open water swimming and this was a huge day for SIU."
Handley paced the field, while senior Kelsie Walker finished 16th after missing nearly half of the 2016-17 season. Walker swam the 5k in a time of 1:08:18.08. Jordan Ries solidified the fourth place finish for the Saluki women by squeaking out a 19th place finish over SLU's Lily Iler.
Senior Nicole Fuller finished 31st in the race with a time of 1:10:20.80.
Southern's team performance was good enough to seat them in fourth place behind hosts and events winners, Kansas, second place Rice and third place Missouri.
On the men's side, the Salukis did not field enough swimmers to qualify a team score, but nonetheless Chris Cole and Kevin Kluge record top-25 finishes in the men's 5k open water national championship.
Cole finished just over two seconds out of the top-10 with a time of 1:04:54.03 in 18th. Kevin Kluge was not far behind in 21st with a time of 1:06:21.87.
"I'm so proud of everyone today. Nicole Fuller, Chris Cole and Kevin Kluge all had really gutsy swims in a field of athletes that were faster and more experienced than ever," Rick Walker said.
Salukis will be back in action next week when the men and women face off with MVC foe Evansville on the road.
