Swimming and Diving heading to Evansville this weekend
09/21/2017 | 10:04:00 | Swimming & Diving
It will be the first dual meet of the season against conference foes
The Saluki swimming and diving season continues on Friday and Saturday with the first meet of the season in which the team will be competing as a whole.
Â
Last week, the team was split into two squads; the distance swimmers were in Lawrence, Kansas for the CSCAA Open Water National Championships while the rest of the team faced off against Lindenwood at home. This week the team as a whole will face their MAC and MVC foes, the Evansville Purple Aces.
Â
"Were excited. This our first travel meet of the year and it's the first time we are all together as a team this year," head coach Rick Walker said. "This is really exciting for our freshmen who are getting the chance to travel and compete for the first time. They'll be nervous and anxious, but also excited and hoping to do well."
Â
The Salukis are coming off a weekend where the team won nine events against Lindenwood then turned in a fourth place finish on the women's side of the CSCAA Open Water National Championship. Senior Bryn Handley won the women's division to be crowned the 2017 Open Water National Champion.
Â
This week, the Salukis swimmers and divers get to turn their attention to far more familiar opponents and competitive situations. Evansville's women's team finished fifth at the MVC Swimming and Diving Championships while the men's team was seventh at the MAC Swimming and Diving Championships. The Salukis competed against Evansville twice during the regular season and Southern's men's and women's team won both times.
Â
Evansville's women's team is returning two All-Conference selections from the 2016-17 season. Senior diver Courtney Coverdale won the one-meter dive and was second in the three-meter dive at MVC Championships in February. Senior swimmer Danielle Freeman is also back after earning All-Conference honors for her second place finish in the 50-yard freestyle at the 2017 MVC Championships.
Â
"Every year Evansville is ready for us," Walker said. "This is a big pump up meet for them and that's good for us. We have to stay sharp and be on our toes. We can't take Evansville lightly. I'm looking for us to race well."
Â
The Salukis take on Evansville on Friday and Saturday in Evansville. The meet begins Friday evening at 4 p.m. with diving events and continues the following day at 11 a.m. with a day full of swimming.
