ST. LOUIS - Southern Illinois offensive lineman Austin Olsen was named Missouri Valley Football Conference Offensive Lineman of the Week, the league announced Monday morning.Â
Olsen led SIU's offense at Memphis on Saturday. The Salukis did not surrender a sack and have only surrendered one sack all season, which leads the MVFC and ranks second nationally. Against Memphis, who was ranked No. 31 in both major FBS polls, Olsen and the Salukis put up 393 yards of total offense and scored 31 points. Southern averaged nearly five yards per play and took a 21-17 halftime lead against the Tigers.
Memphis had recorded a sack in six-straight games dating back to the end of 2016, and the Tigers had totaled 17 sacks in their previous six games before Olsen and the other linemen kept them off the quarterback on Saturday. Olsen has started 25-straight games for SIU on the offensive line.Â
The honor is the second career MVFC Offensive Lineman of the Week honor for Olsen, who also earned it in 2015 when SIU put up 673 yards of offense against Missouri State.Â
Olsen and the Salukis host Northern Iowa on Saturday for Family Weekend and the Black Out Cancer game. Tickets are available at SIUSalukis.com or by calling 877-SALUKIS.Â
