The Saluki Women's Golf Team will tee off their 2017 season on Sunday at the Redbird Invitational in Normal, Ill. This is the first time the Salukis will get the chance to see other teams in action after coming off a sixth-place finish at the Missouri Valley Conference Championship.
Â
The Salukis ended their last season with three tournament wins, the second-longest streak of top-five finishes in Head coach Alexis O'Brien's tenure, and Brooke Cusumano was named to the MVC All-Conference Team.
Â
With most of the team returning from last year, and with some strong freshman, O'Brien is expecting the team to have a knock out season despite losing three key seniors.
                        Â
"It looks like Hanna Netisingha and Alice Ho will bounce around playing in Brooke's number one spot," O'Brien said. "Moyea Russell is really solid and she will take Kristie's place and Emilyee McGiles will most likely fill the role Xianmei had in the fifth spot."
Â
For the Redbird Invitational, O'Brien has Ho, Netisingha, and Russell as her top three. Sophomore Erica Kerr and McGiles will fill in the fourth and fifth spot. Junior Sun Jung will travel as an individual.
Â
The Salukis have an advantage when it comes to the Invitational, all players have had experience at Weibring Golf Club.
Â
"Erica grew up in Peoria and has the most experience on this course since its hosts a lot of high school and junior events in central Illinois," O'Brien said. "Emilyee has the second most experience on this course. She played a Mid-American Junior Golf Tour event and Youth Classic events here this summer to prepare.  They are ready for this course to light it up."Â
Â
Netisingha won a collegiate youth classic at the course this summer. McGiles placed third and Kerr fifth in the same event. Ho and Jung have played on the course the past couple years at the Redbird Invitational.
Â
The tournament gives the Salukis a chance to see four other MVC teams in action early in the season. Bradley, Illinois State, Loyola and Valparaiso will all be in attendance on Sunday. But, O'Brien says the teams to beat are NIU and ISU.
Â
"ISU always plays good on their home course and NIU is the strongest team in the field," O'Brien said. "If we are in the final pairing with these two teams then it would be good a tournament."
The Redbird Invitational will have a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. with rounds one and two on Sunday. Round three will be on Monday. Live scoring will be available on birdiefire.comÂ
