The rookie from Raymond, Ill. becomes the fifth player to sweep the weekly awards in MVC history.
ST. LOUIS - Southern Illinois women's basketball player Abby Brockmeyer has been named both the Missouri Valley Conference Player and Newcomer of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday. Brockmeyer becomes just the fifth player in conference history to earn both honors in the same week and the first to do so in program history.
Brockmeyer averaged 21.5 points, 11.0 rebounds, 2.5 blocks and 2.0 steals to help guide the Salukis to a pair of MVC road victories. The Raymond, Ill. native set the school record for points by a freshman in a Missouri Valley Conference game in SIU's 64-52 win over Evansville on Friday. All told, Brockmeyer set or tied nine career-bests in SIU's conference opening win, including points (27), rebounds (14), offensive rebounds (6) and steals (3) and notched the third double-double of her career.
Brockmeyer followed with a game-high 16 points on 5-of-7 shooting to go along with eight rebounds and a career-high four blocks in Southern's 64-45 win at Indiana State on Sunday. Her 43 combined points are the most of any Valley player through two conference games this season and are the most by a freshmen to start Valley play in program history.
Brockmeyer is the fifth player in MVC history, and the second this season, to earn both weekly honors in the same week. She is the first freshmen to earn both honors since Jan. 19, 2009, when Casey Garrison of Missouri State swept both awards. Brockmeyer joins Illinois State's Kristi Cirone (Dec. 19, 2005), Creighton's Kelsey Woodard (Feb. 4, 2008), Garrison (Jan. 19, 2009) and Evansville's Hannah Noe (Nov. 13, 2017) as the only players to earn both awards since the conference began giving out the Newcomer of the Week award prior to the 2003-04 season.
Brockmeyer's 27 points are tied for the most by a freshman in a single game in program history. Cartaesha Macklin dropped 27 points in SIU's 77-63 win over IUPUI on Dec. 8, 2011.
Southern Illinois (7-6, 2-0 MVC) will host two teams picked ahead of the Salukis in the MVC Preseason Poll in Northern Iowa (6-7, 2-0 MVC) and Drake (7-7, 2-0 MVC). UNI and SIU will tip-off at 6 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 5, and will return to the SIU Arena on Sunday, Jan. 7 at 2 p.m. against the Bulldogs. Both games will be on ESPN3 and can be heard on WVZA 105.1 FM.
