CARBONDALE, IL. – After ending the fall season on a high note, SIU Men's Golf prepares for a challenging spring schedule. The Salukis last competed in the Pinetree Intercollegiate at Kennesaw State where they placed first as a team and Peyton Wilhoit won the individual title.
SIU built momentum throughout the fall season by playing against top competition. They started off tying for eighth out of 16 at Indiana's Wolf Run Intercollegiate. The Salukis followed that up with 11th place at Iowa's Golfweek Conference Challenge and sixth place at the LSU David Toms Intercollegiate.
"We had a really solid fall season, especially ending it with a victory, so I am very pleased with how things continued to get better throughout the fall," said SIU head coach Justin Fetcho. "I believe that if we can continue to strengthen our mental game and wedge play, things will continue to improve for us."
The Salukis will start of the spring season with the Desert Intercollegiate in Palm Desert, California on February 16-18. The spring schedule includes Florida State's Seminole Intercollegiate, the South Florida Invitational, Kingsmill Intercollegiate, Red Wolves Intercollegiate, and the Purdue Boilermaker Invitational. The team will end the spring by hosting the MVC Championship on April 23-24 in Cape Girardeau, Missouri.
Coach Fetcho has high hopes for the spring, "Our team understands that we can play against anyone, and now we just have to go be fearless. We will be looking to build momentum in the spring season, just like we did in the fall season, so that we are playing our best golf of the year at the end of the spring."
Wilhoit enters the spring as the team's stroke leader at 73.3. "The last two events of the fall for Peyton were huge for his confidence," said Fetcho." Being in position to win a golf tournament and feeling comfortable in the final round is tough to handle and Peyton proved that he can handle it very well. If he can continue to take the correct mental approach into each event, he will do some amazing things this spring."
