The Southern Illinois University volleyball team dropped a Missouri Valley Conference match against Loyola in straight sets (23-25, 21-25, 19-25) Monday night at Gentile Arena.
Â
How it Happened
• The Ramblers scored the first three points of the match and led by that many until back-to-back kills by Lindsey Paulsen got SIU to within one, 6-5. The Salukis again went to their middle, this time to Patience Brown to tie the frame at 7-all. Neither team could break the tie until back-to-back kills by Paulsen staked Southern to a 15-13 lead at the midway point.
• The Salukis took their largest lead of the set, 19-15 on a solo stuff by Brown before the Ramblers began to chip away. Loyola scored six of the next seven points to retake the lead 21-20 and scored three of the next four points to get to set point. A kill by Brown coupled with a Rambler attack error made it a one point game, but Loyola sided out thanks to a net violation call on the Salukis to get the win.
• The Salukis hit .300 in the second set, but the Ramblers did them one better and hit at a .432 clip. The two teams traded sideout points until Loyola grabbed the first two point lead at 12-10. The Ramblers lead remained two until a block by Paulsen and a double called on Loyola tied the set, 14-all. Southern tied the set twice more, on aces by Patience Brown and Laura Rojas, the latter of which tied the set 19-all. The Ramblers scored six of the final eight points to break the tie and claim the second set.Â
• The two sides traded 3-0 spurts to start the third set. Loyola scored the first three points of the set before Southern countered with three-straight points. The Ramblers rattled off four-straight points to build a 7-3 lead. The Salukis rallied to take their first lead of the set on a double block by Alayna Martin and Lindsey Paulsen that gave SIU a 15-14 edge. The Ramblers sided out to the tie the set, where it remained until Loyola broke an 18-all tie by scoring eight of the final nine points to secure the three-set win.
By the Numbers
• Southern's block continued to be a difference maker. The Salukis tallied nine blocks to the Ramblers three. Four Salukis recorded blocks in the win, led by Lindsey Paulsen, who finished with seven total blocks, including two solo. Alayna Martin tallied three blocks for the second-straight match while Patience Brown and Malvis Ortiz each added two blocks.
• The Salukis connected well with their middle hitters and hit a combined .400. Lindsey Paulsen led the team with seven kills and hit at a .462 clip while Patience Brown hit .353 and added six kills, an ace and three digs.Â

• Defensively, Keera Clarke led the Saluki back row with 15 digs. It was the second-straight match in which the sophomore libero has dug out 15 balls and the sixth time in her last seven matches that she has reached double figures.Â
