ST LOUIS – Three Saluki cross country runners were recognized by the Missouri Valley Conference as part of its 2018 MVC Scholar-Athlete Team, the league announced Tuesday.
Josh Maier, Cain Hassim and Megan Krolak each earned MVC Scholar-Athlete honors by placing in the top-20 at the conference championships while maintaining at least a 3.2 cumulative grade-point average as a sophomore in both athletic and academic standing. Southern's three recipients are its most in a single-season since 2014.
Maier, a redshirt senior from Alsip, Ill., is a computer science major who owns a 4.0 cumulative GPA. Maier's spot on the MVC Scholar-Athlete team caps off an impressive weekend in which he won the 14th MVC individual title in program history. His winning time of 23:57.3 was the fastest ran by a Saluki at the MVC championship meet since Eddie Wedderburn ran 23:55 to win the 1983 MVC title.
Maier also won his fourth career MVC Elite 17 award, which is given to the highest all-conference finisher with the highest GPA, to become the first back-to-back recipient of the Elite 17 award in cross country since the award began in 2010. It is the third-straight MVC Scholar-Athlete Team honor for Maier, who becomes just the 12th Saluki, and first since Brian Dixon in 2013, to earn MVC Scholar-Athlete recognition in each of their three seasons of eligibility.
Hassim, a redshirt junior from St. Catharines, Ontario, is an art major with a 3.75 cumulative GPA. Hassim earned the first All-MVC cross country honor of his career with his 13th place finish Saturday and this is the first time he's earned a spot on the MVC Scholar-Athlete team for cross country.
Krolak, a redshirt junior from Peru, Ill., holds a 3.58 GPA as an exercise science major. She became the first Saluki since Krista Menghini in 2014 to place in the top-15 with her 11th place finish Saturday and this marks the first MVC Scholar-Athlete team selection of Krolak's career.
Both men's and women's teams are back in action on Nov. 9, as they travel back to Peoria, Ill., for the 2018 NCAA Midwest Regional.
