Salukis drop Saturday match at Indiana State

The Southern Illinois University volleyball team battled but fell to the Indiana State Sycamores, 3-0 (33-35, 20-25, 23-25) Saturday night in Missouri Valley Conference action. Maggie Nedoma finished a dig shy of a double-double with 14 kills and nine digs while Marissa Rossi dished out a career-high 21 assists.
The Salukis fall to 4-15 and 0-6 in MVC play while the Sycamores improve to 8-11 and 1-6 in the Valley.
Inside the Match
-Southern used a 5-1 spurt to break a 3-all tie and take an 8-4 lead early in the first set. SIU's lead remained four (12-8) after Maggie Nedoma put a kill down along the sideline. A solo stuff by Lindsey Paulsen again grew Southern's lead to four, 15-11.
- Indiana State ran off six-straight points to build a two-point advantage, 17-15. Southern answered with a 5-1 run to go ahead two, 20-18. Nedoma twice gave SIU a two-point lead, including at 23-21. The Sycamores ran off three-straight kills before Nedoma's seventh kill tied the set, 24-all. The scored remained thru nine ties before the Sycamores used an error and a block to close out the set.Â

- Indiana State scored the first three points of the second set and build a five-point advantage at the midway point, 15-10. Paige Yoder tallied her fourth kill out of the media timeout to get to within four, but three-straight points by the Sycamores grew Southern's deficit to seven, 18-11.
-SIU got back into the match with timely aces from Rachel Maguire and Keera Clarke, who helped the Salukis score seven of the next eight points to trim ISU's lead down to one, 19-18. The Sycamores, however, scored six of the next seven points to take a 2-0 set score lead.
-The Salukis used a 7-1 run to break a 10-all tie and build a six-point advantage, 17-11. The Sycamores clawed their way back and tied the set, 23-23 before back-to-back points sealed the set and match win.

-Marissa Rossi caught the Sycamore defense back on its heels and recorded her first career kill to tie set one, 32-32. Rossi also dished out a career-high 21 assists and added seven digs.
-Maggie Nedoma reached double figures in kills for the 14th time this season. The sophomore opposite hitter finished with a team-best 14 kills and added nine digs.
-Keera Clarke got the start at libero and dug out 14 balls. It marked the third time this season she has reached double-digits.
-Lindsey Paulsen and Paige Yoder both set career-highs in kills. Paulsen hit .714 and put down five kills on seven swings while Yoder added six kills and three digs.
-Rachel Maguire reached double figures for the third time this season, as she put down 11 kills to go along with six digs and two aces.
