Three swimmers to compete at Winter Nationals

Saluki swimmers Chris Cole, Chris Phillips and Samantha Parsons will travel to Greensboro, North Carolina to represent SIU in the USA Winter Nationals from Nov. 28 (Wednesday) to Dec. 1 (Saturday). The events will take place at the Greensboro Aquatic Center. This marks Parsons second-straight appearance at the Winter Nationals, while both Cole and Phillips will be making their debuts.Â
The Winter Nationals, a part of USA Swimming's Championship Series, features top collegiate, club and individual swimmers from around the nation. The event is in its 12th year of existence and is being hosted at the Greensboro Aquatic Center for the first time since 2014.Â
Parsons competed in the 100- and 200-yard breaststroke at last year's Winter Nationals in Columbus, Ohio. Her best finish came in the 200-breast (2:17.79), where she placed 26th overall.Â
Parsons will again compete in the 200-breast. She will be one of 63 competitors vying for the top spot. Preliminaries for the 200-breast commence on Friday, during the morning session. The native of Montreal, Canada boasts a season-best time of 2:16.84 in the event, good for second fastest in the Missouri Valley Conference.Â
Cole will swim in the 400-yard IM prelims amid a field of 32 competitors in the Friday morning session. The senior's 3:58.52 mark in the 400-IM ranks third in the Mid-American Conference, just .71 seconds shy of the top conference time.Â
Phillips is set to swim in the 100-breast, 200-breast and 200-IM. The junior holds top-five times in Saluki history times in all three events. He will begin his busy week on Thursday, during the morning session in the 200-IM prelims. Phillips will then compete in the 100-breast prelims Friday morning and close out prelims in the 200-breast Saturday morning.
