CARBONDALE, Ill. — Southern Illinois center Jacob Marnin and safety Jeremy Chinn were named to the Missouri Valley Football Conference All-Academic team, the league announced on Wednesday.
Marnin was a first-team selection and Chinn was named to the second team. The Salukis have had at least one player on the All-Academic team every season since its inception in 1994. Nominees for the team must be starters or important reserves and carry a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.20. True freshmen, redshirt freshmen and first-year transfers are not eligible. League sports information directors voted on the team by designating 11 players for first-team honors and 11 players for second-team honors.
A three-year starter on SIU's offensive line, Marnin (6-1, 303, Jr.) is the active leader in career starts (29) at Southern and started nine games this season, missing two due to injury. He helped pave the way for an offense that averaged 30 points and 431 yards per game and featured 1,000-yard rusher D.J. Davis. A CoSIDA Academic All-District selection in 2017 and 2018, Marnin sports a perfect 4.00 GPA and is majoring in Criminology and Criminal Justice.
Chinn (6-2, 211, Jr.), who was named First-Team All-Conference on Monday, added the academic honors to his resume today. He is an Exercise Science major with a 3.58 GPA. A three-year starter in SIU's secondary, Chinn recorded team-high three interceptions and led the team with seven pass breakups. He was also second on the team in tackles with 55, forced two fumbles and blocked a field goal. He started nine games, including two starts at cornerback, before missing the final two games due to injury.
