ST. LOUIS — Ciaja Harbison scored a career-high 22 points to lead the Saint Louis Billikens to a 62-58 win over the Southern Illinois Salukis Thursday night inside Chaifetz Arena.
Harbison finished 9-of-14 from the field for the Billikens, who led from start to finish to pick up their second-straight win. Harbison, along with Jordyn Frantz, combined for 44 of SLU's 62 points.
"Harbison is a very talented young lady who is a lot to handle," sixth-year head coach Cindy Stein said. "I felt like we forced her into quite a few turnovers but we let her get to the basket too much."
Southern looked sluggish from the tip, as the Salukis made just one of its first eight shots and trailed by double-digits (14-3) after the game's first five minutes of play.
"I felt like we had the right cuts and timing but then a poor pass," Stein said. "We missed a lot of shots around the rim that we usually make. We just didn't have it today."
The Billikens thwarted each of Southern's attempts to mount a rally and seemingly seized momentum whenever SIU knocked at the door. The Salukis didn't necessarily help themselves, as SIU was just 8-of-17 from the charity stripe.
The Salukis got to within two, 51-49 on a trey by Kristen Nelson with 6:30 to play in regulation but Harbison provided the answer to put Saint Louis ahead by four. A minute and a half later, she staked the Billikens to an eight-point advantage (57-49) with 4:36 to play.
Nelson again got SIU to within two with a 3-ball with 17 seconds to play, but Saint Louis sank a pair of free throws to seal the win.
Southern was led by Nicole Martin, who finished with a season-high 21 points and five boards. It marked the fifth-time in the Jefferson City, Mo. native's career that she has poured in 20-plus points.
Makenzie Silvey and Kristen Nelson joined Martin in double figures. Silvey scored 13 points to go along with four rebounds and two steals while Nelson added a season-best 12 points, five rebounds and four assists in 32 minutes off the bench.
The Salukis are back at home on Dec. 7-8 to host inaugural Compass Challenge. Southern will take on Northern Illinois on Dec. 7 at 7 p.m. before tangling with Eastern Illinois on Dec. 8 at 3:30 p.m.
