In its first-ever trip to play a tournament in Hawaii, the Southern Illinois men's golf team finished in 17th place out of 20 teams at the Ka'anapali Classic, hosted by Hawaii. The Salukis improved each round, moving from 20th place after round one, to 19th the next round, and moving up two more slots after the third and final round.
Peyton Wilhoit (-2) led the Salukis and tied for 42nd place with a final score of 211. He was consistent throughout the tournament with scores of 70, 71 and 70, and he carded 13 birdies. Senior Luke Gannon (+2) tied tied for 57th place with a score of 215. Freshman Vikar Jonasson (+9) took 92nd place and had a pair of eagles in the tournament.
SIU men's golf played its best of the three rounds on Sunday, recording a 281 team score — the 13th best team score of the day. In a field stacked with nine BCS teams, Southern edged out Hawaii, George Washington and Air Force in the final standings.
The Salukis will take a break from competition until the spring season begins on Feb. 16 at the Gator Invitational, hosted by the University of Florida.
