Volleyball falls at Drake

The Southern Illinois University volleyball team fell to the Drake Bulldogs, 3-0 (20-25, 21-25, 18-25) in Missouri Valley Conference action Friday night inside the Knapp Center.
Inside the match
• The Bulldogs put together the first scoring run of the opening set, as they used a 4-1 spurt to break an 8-all tie. Southern got to within one, 12-11 courtesy of back-to-back points, but Drake answered with four-straight points to increase its lead to five, 16-11.
• Drake grew its lead to eight before SIU scored five-straight points to cut its deficit to three, 23-20. The Bulldogs sided out and then set Natalie Fry for the kill on set point to take the opening frame.
• The Salukis hit .367 in the second frame but the Bulldogs one-upped them by hitting at a .444 clip to take a 2-0 lead. SIU led early, 7-6 on a kill by Malvis Ortiz, but Drake scored five-straight points to take an 11-7 lead. Southern used a 3-0 spurt, highlighted by a double block by Rachel Maguire and Lindsey Paulsen to get to within two, 14-12 but that was as close as they would get.
• Southern got off to a fast start in the third set as one of Maguire's nine kills staked SIU to a 5-3 lead. Southern again built its lead to two, 11-9 on a kill by Patience Brown and again at 15-13 on an ace by Alison Thomas. The Bulldogs, however, scored 10 of the next 12 points to build a lead they never relinquished.Â
Inside the numbers
• Kat Wagner led SIU's defensive efforts with 13 digs. It marked the 11th time this season she has dug out at least 10 balls while her 212 digs this season currently ties her with Mary Bogdanski for the 17th-most by a freshman in program history.Â
• Patience Brown hit .500 with six kills on 12 swings while fellow middle Lindsey Paulsen tallied six kills and four blocks.
• Rachel Maguire finished with a team-best nine kills and added six digs. It was most kills for the sophomore hitter in over a month (10/6 at Indiana State).Â
• Alayna Martin piloted the offense and finished with 27 assists, seven digs and three kills.
