CARBONDALE, Ill. — Erica Kerr, a junior on the women's golf team from Peoria, received the SIU Diane Daugherty Women's Golf Team Scholarship for the 2018-19 academic school year. Kerr is currently studying biology and is one of the top contributors to the team.
"I did not just come here for golf," said Kerr. "I am a student first and if I did not keep my grades up – the hard work I put in on the course would all be for nothing."
During Kerr's freshman year she competed in only three tournaments but was able to score in the 70s four times.
"My freshman year was tough because it was an adjustment to learn how to cope with school and athletics," said Kerr.
Kerr has continued to develop each year – improving her strokes per round average from 80.0 (2016-17) to 78.7 (2017-18).
"Erica has a strong sense of dedication to the team," said women's golf coach Danielle Kaufman. "She has developed immensely as a golfer and as a leader. Her hard work has been inspirational to the entire team."
"I put in multiple hours practicing out at Hickory Ridge to better my golf game to be able to earn a spot on the travel team," said Kerr. "It wasn't an easy journey but so far all the hard work has paid off."
During the Chi-Town classic in 2017, Kerr's hard work paid off when she finished fourth, shooting in the 70s both days. That led to her having a great season, shooting in the 70's 17 times throughout the 2017-18 campaign.
"Coming to SIU was one of the best decisions I have made," said Kerr. "Earning the Diane Daugherty Women's Golf Team Scholarship is an honor – this allows me to continue the traditions she put forth and make the SIU women's golf team one of the greatest."
Kerr is not only a top student-athlete but she is also a member of the executive board for the SAAC (Student-Athletic Advisory Committee).
"Kerr understands the hard work and dedication it takes to be a Saluki," said Coach Kaufman.
