
Southern Illinois finishes 2nd in NCAA Service Challenge

Southern Illinois finished second in the NCAA® Team Works™ Helper Helper Community Service Competition for their community outreach efforts this fall.
The challenge ran from September through November and focused on promoting goodwill in communities. Southern Illinois finished second in the Division I category. Saluki student-athletes tallied over 3,535 hours, volunteering with many local organizations, including the Marion VA Medical Center, St. Francis CARE Animal Shelter, and Habitat for Humanity.This is the fifth year of the NCAA Service Challenge. NCAA Team Works launched the challenge to recognize student-athletes who give back to their communities. During last year's competition, student-athletes made a $2 million dollar economic impact in their communities. Student-athletes in 2018 combined to do more than 173,820 hours of community service with local organizations, a 44% increase from last year's challenge.
Towson finished first in the Division I competition, followed by Southern Illinois University and the University of Miami. This was SIU's first semester participating in the NCAA Helper Helper Team Works Challenge.
