CARBONDALE, Ill. — Lili Klekner-Alt, a junior on the women's golf team from Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, received the Kenny & Lisa Troutt Scholarship for the 2018-19 academic school year. Klekner-Alt is currently studying animal science and is one of the top contributors on the team.
Lilian has always followed in her sister's footsteps (Marlies and Kiersten – former SIU staff member). Both of them also played golf at a collegiate level (Marlies – Northwood University (MI) and Kiersten – University of Ottawa, Newman University and Gannon University). Learning from her sisters, she knew that playing golf as a Saluki would be a true test.
"I knew the competition would be tough my freshman year and that making the travel team would be a challenge," said Klekner-Alt.
By the end of her freshman year, she was awarded the team's Most Improved Player award.
"This pushed me to continue working hard and striving to make the travel team," said Klekner-Alt. "Receiving the Kenny & Lisa Troutt Scholarship has shown me that my hard work, on and off the course is paying off and it motivates me to continue to work hard."
As a freshman, Lilian fiercely competed in each tournament. During collegiate competition, she shot in the 70's four out of five times. She finished 7th in the Saluki Invitational, making it her top finish.
Lilian's sophomore season, she competed as a regular travel team member. Her lowest round came at the MVC Preview and GCU Invitational.
"Lilian has worked very hard to improve as a golfer and as a student," said women's golf coach Danielle Kaufman. "I am very impressed with her work ethic and determination to get better."
Lilian is also a certified and award-winning level 1 ski coach and instructor. She has always been a team player and hopes to continue to be a top contributor for the Salukis.
"I always tell myself I'm living the dream, because not only am I getting an education – but I get to play the sport that I love and I get to be a Saluki," said Klekner-Alt.
