CARBONDALE, Ill. – The Southern Illinois University track and field team won 12 event titles and recorded a pair of top-10 school marks to open the 2018-19 season at the Saluki Fast Start Saturday.
"I'm proud of our student-athletes and the way they competed and supported each other," Director of Track and Field/Cross Country Rosalind Joseph said. "I'm grateful to my coaching staff, the facility staff, officials, support staff and volunteers for helping us put on a great meet for our student-athletes."
The Salukis had 11 different athletes win an event title, including a sweep of the throwing events.
The Salukis were dominate in the circle Saturday, as three Saluki women threw personal-bests in the weight and Nate Dyer followed with his first win of the season. Alexis Roberson threw a personal-best 67'-6.75" (20.59m) to not only win the event, but she also moved into eighth in program history with her toss. Dyer also set a PR in the event, as he out-dueled teammate Ricky Hurley to win the weight with a toss of 60'-9.50" (18.53m).
Hurley got his redemption in the shot put, as he threw 58'-10.25" (17.94m) to pick up his first win of the season. SIU's men finished 1-2-3 in the event, as Sam Sikon recorded a PR of 58'-2.50" (17.74m) to finish second and Adam Kessler took third. On the women's side, Aveun Moore and Kayleigh Conlon both set personal-bests to take first and second. Moore threw 49'-9" (15.16m) while Conlon recorded a mark of 47'-5.25" (14.46m).
Justine Paton won the high jump at the Saluki Fast Start for the second-straight season. Paton was one of 11 returners to set a PR in the season-opening meet, as she cleared an indoor personal-best of 5'-5.75" (1.67m). Willie Rodgers, meanwhile, was one of two Saluki newcomers to win in their debut. Rodgers cleared 6'-7" (2.01m) with a clean slate to edge out Caleb Vogel in the high jump and pick up his first win while donning the Maroon and White.
Theo Phipps and Savannah Long were both victorious in the 60m hurdles. Phipps moved up to seventh in school history with his winning time of 8.23 while Long won the event for the first time in her collegiate career with a time of 9.08.
In the sprints, Johnny McGluen won the 400m dash and took second in the 200m. McGluen's time in the 200m dash was an indoor collegiate-best at 22.08. Tyjuana Eason won the 200m dash with her time of 24.71 and finished second in the 60m dash at 7.58.
The Saluki women's 4x400 relay team of Genesis Ewell, Savannah Long, Tredaja Harris and Luca-Anna Palasti won with a time of 3:56.23- nearly 26 seconds faster than the next closest competitors.
"It was really great to get to see everyone compete today," Joseph said. "Fall training can seem arduous after a while, so I think everyone, including coaches, wanted to see where we were in terms of our training. It was a good look before winter break. Now everyone knows what to work on, fix and/or continue with while on break. I think our students and coaches all have a better idea for the rest of the season after the meet today."
The Salukis will have more than month to train before their next meet, as SIU is off until Jan. 11-12 when it travels to Lexington, Ky. to take part in the Jim Green Invitational.
