Salukis Resume Indoor Season with successful trip to Kentucky
01/12/2019 | 10:53:00 | Track and Field
Southern tallied 4 top-5 finishes, 10 personal-bests and a top-10 school mark during the two-day meet.
Competing at their second meet of the season and largest meet to date, the Saluki track and field team put up some impressive times and marks at the Jim Green Invitational, hosted by the University of Kentucky.
The Salukis were one of 20 teams that sent student-athletes to compete at the two-day meet, in a field that included four teams ranked in the USTFCCCA Top-25. Southern more than held its own, as the Salukis tallied four top-five finishes, 10 personal-bests, five additional season-best marks and a top-10 school mark.
"The Jim Green Invite was a great way to resume the season," Director of Track and Field/Cross Country Rosalind Joseph said. For the first time this year our student-athletes got a chance to step away from campus and line up against some nationally ranked teams. Coming off a month long winter break can be challenging, for both athletes and coaches, but as I told our student-athletes, I still expected them to compete at their highest level and give 100% effort. This meet gave us all a chance to see where we are in our training and what we need to continue to work on for the remainder of the season."
Leading the way for the Salukis were sprinters Tyjuana Eason and Johnny McGluen. Eason tallied one of SIU's four top-5 finishes at the Jim Green Invitational. The Kankakee, Ill. native ran a season-best 7.55 in the 60m dash to place fifth amongst tough competition and followed with a season-best time of 24.52 in the 200m dash to finish sixth. McGluen, meanwhile, set a pair of collegiate-bests in the 200m and 400m dashes Saturday. McGluen ran 49.04 to finish ninth in the 400m and later ran 22.04 in the 200m dash to finish 10th.Â
Sticking with the oval, Genesis Ewell set a season-best in the 400 meter dash with her time of 57.37 to finish ninth while Canoy Tyree clocked a personal-best in the 800m at 1:53.61 in his season debut.
In the circle, Adam Kessler highlighted an impressive day for the Saluki throwers. Kessler threw 62'-11.50"(19.19m) to finish third and, in doing so, moved up to No. 3 on SIU's all-time list, passing John Smith. Kessler was one of three Salukis to finish in the top-11 in a field of 35 throwers. Sam Sikon took eighth with his toss of 57'-4.75" (17.49m) while Ricky Hurley placed 11th with his mark of 55'-3.50" (16.85m). On the women's side, Aveun Moore took eighth in the shot put while Kayleigh Conlon set a personal-best in the event for the second-straight meet with her mark of 48'-6.25" (14.79m) to place 11th in a field of 50 throwers.
Sticking with the throws, Nate Dyer notched a top-five finish in the weight throw. He threw 57'-3.75" (17.47m) to take fourth.Â
In the jumps, Willie Rodgers recorded the top mark in the Missouri Valley Conference in the triple jump in his debut in the event. Rodgers cleared 48'-1.25 (14.85m) to finish fifth.
Matt Bigelow added a pair of personal-bests to go along with a season-best finish in the 60m dash. Â Bigelow cleared a personal best 6'-2.75" (1.90m) in the high jump Friday night and on Saturday he PR'd in the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.60. He later clocked a season-best time (7.13) in 60-meter dash.
