
Salukis win 11 event titles at John Gartland Invitational

SIU finished second to Indiana State in both the men's and women's team standings.
The Southern Illinois track and field team won 11 event titles at the John Gartland Invitational Saturday, as both the Saluki men and women finished second in the team standings.
The Saluki men and women both finished second to Indiana State. SIU's women tallied 127 points, while Indiana State claimed the top spot with 172 points. Missouri State (114) and DePaul (68) rounded out the field on the women's side. The Sycamore men scored 130 points to edge out Southern, who scored 116 points. DePaul (53) finished a distant third.Â
"I really liked seeing our team compete against other schools in the conference," Director of Track and Field/Cross Country Rosalind Joseph said. "It gave our staff an indicator of how we matchup, and more importantly, it gave our team a chance to see where they matchup."Â
The Saluki men were led in scoring by Willie Rodgers, who scored in all three jumps to amass 17 points. On the women's side, Southern was paced by Genesis Ewell, who tallied 24 points across three events, including wins in the 4x400 relay and the 400m dash. Savannah Long added 20 points across three events, including running a leg of the 4x400 relay alongside Ewell.
Rodgers scored in all three jumps, as he jumped 46'-00.75" (14.04m) in the triple jump to best a field of three jumpers. The Gainesville, Fla. native followed with runner-up performances in the high and long jumps. In the long jump, Rodgers set a PR with his mark of 22'-5.25" (6.84m) while he tied his personal-best in the high jump at 6'-7" (2.01m) to finish second to Caleb Vogel. Vogel cleared a personal-best 6'-10.75" (2.10m) to win his first event title indoors, and in doing so, moved into a tie for the best mark in the event in the Missouri Valley Conference.Â
Ewell ran 57.48 to win the 400m dash Saturday. SIU went 1-2-3 in the event, as Long ran a personal-best 58.38 to finish second and Julie Lutz took third with a season-best time of 58.97. Ewell then clocked a time of 25.62 in the 200m dash to finish third and six more points to her total. She ended her day by teaming up with Long, Lutz and Thurneisha Keys to win the 4x400 relay with a time of 3:53.50.Â
Southern's men made it a clean sweep in the quarter-mile relay. The quartet of Johnny McGluen, Matthew Bigelow, Canoy Tyree and James Croft ran a winning time of 3:22.07. McGluen and Tyree both added wins in separate running events, as McGluen ran 50.20 to win the 400m dash while Tyree won the 800m run with a time of 1:56.19.Â
The Salukis continued their tear in the circle, winning three of four throwing events. Alexis Roberson set the tone early, as she recorded a personal-best in the weight throw for the second time in three meets this season to pick up the win. Roberson threw 69'-7" (21.21m) to not only win the event but she also moved up to No. 7 on SIU's all-time list, passing Sasha Leeth. The Jefferson City, Mo. native is currently ranked No. 10 in the NCAA in the event.
Ricky Hurley made it a sweep for the Salukis in the weight throw, as he won the event with a season-best toss of 61'-2.75" (18.66m). Hurley moved up to No. 1 in the Missouri Valley Conference with his toss and was one of four Salukis to place in the top-5 in the event. Adam Kessler set a personal-best with his mark of 60'-6" (18.41m) to finish second, while Nate Dyer took third and Peyton Taylor finished fifth in his season debut.Â
Kessler won the shot put with a toss of 59'-2.25" (18.04m). Southern went 1-2-3 in the shot put, as Sam Sikon scored five points with his runner-up finish and Hurley came in third. Kessler holds steady at No. 10 on the NCAA performance list with his mark from the Jim Green Invitational.
Southern's distance group was led by freshman Reid Parsons, who scored seven points with a win in the 5000m. The Comstock Park, Mich. native crossed the finish line in 15:33.26 to win the event and tally the second-best mark in the Valley in the event. Jacob DeWitt added four points with a third place finish.
The Salukis are next in action at the Indiana Relays, hosted by Indiana University. The  two-day meet begins on Friday, Jan. 25 at 5 p.m. with heptathlon events as well as the 60m hurdles.
