
Salukis close out competition at Indiana Relays

SIU notched seven top-5 finishes on day two of the 11-team meet.
The Southern Illinois track and field team closed out competition at the Indiana Relays with seven top-5 finishes, including three runner-up performances, on day two inside Gladstein Fieldhouse.
"We are in the middle of the indoor season where now we're really just shifting our focus to fine-tuning for the conference meet," Director of Track and Field/Cross Country Rosalind Joseph said. "I thought everyone came out of this meet with a better understanding of what they need to do to be ready in a few weeks."
Matthew Bigelow got SIU off to a good start with a runner-up finish in the heptathlon. Bigelow, who came into the day in first, maintained his lead with a third place finish in the 60m hurdles. The Carterville, Ill. product fell back after he placed eighth in the pole vault and closed with a ninth place finish in the 1000m run. Bigelow totaled 4919 points, finishing just 148 points out of first place. Butler's Wade Walder won with 5067 points.
The Salukis notched a pair of top-five finishes in the 60m hurdles. Theo Phipps, who clocked the second-fastest qualifying time in the event, finished second Saturday with a time of 8.30. Savannah Long followed by setting a personal-best with her time of 8.98 to finish fourth.
In the sprints, Tyjuana Eason finished second in the 60m dash at the Indiana Relays with a time of 7.59. it marked the third time in the senior sprinters last four meets that she has placed second in the event. In the 400m dash, Genesis Ewell clocked a season-best time of 56.69 to finish third.Â
In the circle, Adam Kessler took third in the shot put after he threw 62'-7.75" (19.09m). Saluki alum Jared Kern won the event with a toss of 64'-3.75" (19.60m).Â
Southern finished the day with a third place showing in the women's 4x400 relay. The quartet of Long, Eason, Julie Lutz and Ewell combined to run 3:45.61 to take third in the 10 team field. SIU finished ahead of Indiana and Wisconsin's A relay teams.
The Salukis are back in action beginning Friday, Feb. 1 when they host the Don DeNoon Invitational. The two-day event gets underway at 9:45 a.m. on Friday with multi-events.Â
