
Track and Field heads to Bloomington for Indiana Relays

Southern will send a partial squad to the 11-team meet.
CARBONDALE, Ill. — The Southern Illinois track and field team will send a partial squad to the Hoosier State this weekend to compete in the Indiana University Relays inside the Gladstein Fieldhouse. SIU is one of 11 teams set to compete at the two-day event, which begins Friday at 5 p.m.
Looking at the field: Indiana Relays
11 teams will send student-athletes to the Indiana Relays, including a pair of nationally ranked men's teams in No. 14 Indiana and No. 19 Wisconsin. Ole Miss, Notre Dame and Butler round out the Power 5 conference programs in attendance, while Florida International, Tennessee Tech, Western Kentucky, Miami (Ohio) and SEMO are also slated to compete.
Partial Squad
Southern will send 27 (13 men/14 women) student-athletes to Bloomington, Ind. for the mid-season meet. 11 Salukis are entered in multiple events, which doesn't include Matthew Bigelow and Kira Williams, who will compete in the heptathlon and pentathlon, respectively, for the first time this season. Ty Eason, Genesis Ewell and Savannah Long will be amongst SIU's busiest athletes at Indiana - all three are entered in two individual events and the trio will team up with Julia Lutz to run the 4x400 relay.
Top-15 in the nation
A pair of Salukis rank in the top-15 nationally in their respective events. Adam Kessler threw 62'-11.5" (19.19m) at the Jim Green Invitational to rank No. 10 nationally in the shot put. Alexis Roberson has set a PR in the weight throw in two of three meets this season including her toss of 69'-7" (21.21m) from last weekend's meet that moved her up to No. 11 nationally.
Top times in the Valley
The Salukis hold six top marks in the Missouri Valley Conference, led by Tyjuana Eason. Eason has the top-marks in the Valley in both the 60m (7.55) and the 200m (24.34). Caleb Vogel sits atop the men's high jump after his personal-best jump at the John Gartland Invitational, while Willie Rodgers currently has the top triple jump clearance in the conference. Additionally, Southern leads both men's throwing events, with Adam Kessler (shot put and Ricky Hurley (weight throw) each atop the Valley rankings.

Alexis Roberson continued to improve upon her top-10 school mark in the weight throw at the John Gartland Invitational. Roberson cracked the top-10 in the event at the Saluki Fast Start on Dec. 8 and bettered that mark at last weekend's John Gartland Invitational. The Jefferson City, Mo. native threw 69'-7" (19.19m) to pass Sasha Leeth and move up to No. 7 on SIU's all-time list.
Salukis Sweep MVC Field Athlete of the Week Honors
Adam Kessler and Alexis Roberson swept the MVC Field Athletes of the Week honors after their stellar performances at the John Gartland Invitational.
Kessler earned the award for the second-straight week while Roberson collected her fourth career MVC Field Athlete of the Week honor.
