
Salukis in second at MVC Championships after record setting day

After the first day of the Missouri Valley Conference Swimming and Diving Championships, the Salukis are in a three-way tie for second place.

Missouri State, the defending MVC champions, are first with 80 points. Northern Iowa, Indiana State and Southern Illinois all have 64 points. The Salukis recorded two top-five finishes in the opening two events of the Conference Championship meet.

In the 200-yard medley relay, the opening event of the MVC Championships, Southern's 200-yard medley relay team of Rita Naude, Sam Parsons, Emma Brazeau and McKennea Avery finished fourth with a time of 1:42.79 to set a new school record in the event. The previous school record was set in the 2015-16 by Sarah James, Liane Tatigian, Brazeau and Avery. That team swam the event with a time of 1:43.01.

In the 800-yard freestyle relay, the second and final event of the evening, the relay team of Jordan Ries, Kelsie Walker, Nicole Fuller and Bryn Handley were second with a time of 7:22.49, the fourth fastest time in school history. With their performance, the team earned Southern 34 towards the overall team score.

The MVC Swimming and Diving Championships continue tomorrow with the second day of action. The preliminaries start at 11 a.m. and the finals begin at 6 p.m.
