
Salukis second, Beibei Ji one-meter Champ at MVC Championships

The Saluki women's swimming and diving team closed out the second day of competition at the Missouri Valley Conference Swimming and Diving Championships with its first individual Conference champion and three more All-Conference performances. Southern's strong night in the pool and on the boards moved the team into second overall. The Salukis are just 17.5 points behind Missouri State who lead. Southern has a 39-point cushion over third-place UNI; the Salukis and Panthers were tied after day one.

Sophomore diver Beibei Ji won the one-meter dive with a score of 299.01 for her first career Conference title. Her twin sister, Baobao Ji was second with a score of 292.05, which earned her a spot on the All-Conference team, the first selection of her career. Senior Rachel Williams finished fourth with a score of 269.31. Southern's three divers earned a total of 52 points towards the Salukis' team score.

In the women's 50-yard freestyle, senior McKenna Avery finished third with a time of 23.04 to make the All-Conference team for the second time of her career. In prelims, Avery swam the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 22.99, which was good enough for an NCAA B Cut time. Her time in prelims set a new school-record. The previous record stood for 26 years. It was set by Nancy Schmidlkofer with a time of 23.08 in the 1991-92 season.

In the 500-yard freestyle, the first event of the evening, Bryn Handley finished second with a time of 4:48.15 to earn a spot on the All-Conference team for her fourth-straight year. It was the fifth-fastest swim in the event in school history. Senior Kelsie Walker was seventh in the event.

In the 200-yard freestyle relay, SIU's team of Avery, freshman Abbie Young, Handley and senior Chandler Ott finished third with a time of 1:33.88.

In the 200-yard IM, three Salukis made the A final. Sophomore Laura Carver led the way in the event with a time of 2:04.39. Junior Emma Brazeau was fifth and sophomore Peyton Parman was eighth. Carver's time was the third-fastest in program history in the 200-IM.
